I listen to a lot of music when I write. I find it helps set the mood and, honestly, I can get a little obsessive about it — playing the same song over and over throughout the course of a project.

Eventually, there’s no separating the song from the story. They’re linked forever.

Yann Tiersen’s lovely “Comptine d’un Autre Été” from the Amelie soundtrack will always bring to mind the image of two children and their mother driving through the early dark morning, surrounded by snow.

And it will always hurt a little bit.
