A number of years ago I had the opportunity to hear Neil Gaiman speak to a literature class at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Think about that: A literature class that studies comic books.

In his talk, Gaiman told us about a story he was telling his daughters before bedtime. About a little girl who lives in a flat where a door leads her into a nightmare world. He told us about how the people in this other world have buttons for eyes and that someday, who knew when, the story might end up being written.

Eight years later, and here is Coraline. I don’t know much about the book but, knowing Gaiman’s work, I have a lot of anticipation for it.

Amazon isn’t listing it yet (at least not accurately), but there is an audio books version coming out this summer (read by Gaiman, released ahead of the publication). I’ve already pre-ordered it (fanboy that I am).

I started writing a story for Sam and Julia late last year, initially as a Christmas present. Halfway through, I realized I was writing something far too scary for Christmas . . . and that it was the third chapter in a longer story.

Once the first drafts of The Odyssey adaption is done later this month, I’ll be sharing my time between revisions of the script and working on this new piece.

I’m excited about a new book from Gaiman, but I’m also excited to get to work on something new of my own.
